Dzundza L., Lutska M. Ecocide as a crime against nature

Purpose. The purpose of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of ecocide as the most terrible actions of man against nature, using the example of aggression in Ukraine. as well as the stages of its legal consolidation in international legislation. Methodology. The methodology includes a comprehensive analysis and a synthesis of available scientific and theoretical information. It is includes the formulation ofrelevant conclusions and recommendations. Such methods of scientific knowledgewere used: terminological, functional, systemic-structural, logical-normative. Results: it was established that ecocide is an extremely serious crime against humanity, the consequences of which are felt over a long period of time. Its formation is most often determined by military actions, and the consequences are manifested in the total destruction of natural and artificial ecosystems, a decrease in species diversity and often the complete disappearance of rare or endemic species, pollution of the atmosphere, hydro and lithosphere by pollutants. At the same time, despite the terrible consequences for the environment and living beings at various levels of the organization, today ecocide is not considered as a separate type of crime and needs more attention from society, scientists and human rights defenders. Originality. In the course of the research, an analysis of the stages of the legal formation of the concept of “ecocide” was carried out, as well as an analysis of the ecological consequences of the full-scale invasion of russia into Ukraine. Practical significance. Research results can be used in law-making and law-enforcement activities during the investigation of crimes related to human impact on the environment.
